How often is practice? – The first Practice will be held at La Jolla Shores on Friday September 20th at 4:00. The meeting spot will always be the same on the grass near the bathrooms at the North end of the parking lot. Plan on meeting and surfing each and every Friday during the school year, but cancellations can be common due to surfing and weather conditions which will be communicated through the site via email.
Is transportation provided? – No. Each student needs to arrange pickup and drop-off.
Is equipment provided? – No. Surfers will need to bring their own wetsuit and surfboard. A waterproof watch is recommended so that surfers know when to come in. Our sponsor Southcoast surf shops provide the team with a 20% discount on most items and 15% off wetsuits if you need equipment.
What will the kids be doing at practice? – Volunteer coaches will be available to provide basic guidance and supervision from both the beach and in the water, but lessons are not provided. Students are advised to surf with a “surf buddy” and watch each other in the water. There are too many kids for the volunteer coaches to track closely, beginners are advised to stay in the white water areas and in plain view of the coaches and lifeguards on the beach.
When are the Family BBQ’s? – We will host at least 1 Beach BBQ for surfers and their families. Dates TBD; email notifications will be sent out.
Will my child be able to compete in surf contests? – If your child wants to compete, they should notify the coaches. The competitive team is managed by alternate coaching staff and the roster is set each week prior to contests based upon skill level, past performance, compliance with team rules, and coach discretion. Most competitors are 7th and 8th-grade surfers; 6th-grade surfers are encouraged to join surf heats for competitive consideration, but should not expect to make the roster unless they are surfing at a 7th or 8th-grade level.
